You will receive a certificate of completion after passing the exam, completing the course evaluation, and purchasing the appropriate number of units.  The certificate of completion will then be accessible on your myCourses page in the Your Course History section under the tab “Aspira Courses I’ve Passed”.  There will be a “Download” button under the “Certificate” column that you will be able to click on to pull up your certificate once all requirements listed above have been met.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will develop the ability to educate patients on utilizing recovery support and other tools in coping with emotion.
  • Participants will learn to use chemical dependence groups as a training ground for patients to feel and tolerate shame.
  • Participants will learn to coach patients to “parent” their inner-child when trauma and/or shame are activated.

Course Description:

In this course, Shame Resilience, Bob Tyler, building on his Coping with Emotions model emphasizing the importance of learning to feel and experience uncomfortable emotions in addiction recovery, incorporates the work of Brene’ Brown and its application to addiction treatment. Participants will learn specific skills to aid clients in coping specifically with shame in recovery.

Instructor: Bob Tyler, BA, LAADC, CADC II

Bob Tyler has been working in the chemical dependence recovery profession since 1990. After beginning his personal recovery from alcohol and drug addiction in December of 1988, he completed the Alcohol and Studies Program at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). He then worked as a Counselor at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica until 1997 when he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at LMU. He served as Program Director at Life Change Residential Treatment Center for two years, followed by 14 years at Twin Town Treatment Centers where he served as Director of Operations and Clinical Services managing their six Intensive Outpatient Treatment programs – each serving adults and adolescents. He left there in 2013 to pursue his passion of helping people get sober who can’t afford rehab founding STAT Sobriety Services, a 501(c)(3), non-profit.

Bob served for fourteen years on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC), chaired its Quality Assurance and Third Party/Managed Care Committees for eight of those years, and served as its President for two years ending in January 2009. He then served as Treasurer of the California Foundation for the Advancement of Addiction Professionals (CFAAP) from 2011 – 2014, and in 2015 was a founding board member for the California Consortium for the Advancement of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP). Bob also serves on numerous Advisory Boards for Alcohol and Drug Studies Programs and is on faculty at LMU Extension teaching Case Management and Ethics in their Alcohol and Drug Studies program.  To see Bob Tyler’s full bio, click here: Bob Tyler’s Bio.
