Group Counseling for Chemical Dependence course objectives and description
Course Objectives:
- Learn the importance of group rules and consistent enforcement of them to protect the group from distractions.
- Develop the ability to structure a group where the counselor gives way to group members for feedback to one other, therefore decreasing dependence on the counselor.
- Develop the ability to help clients identify and process uncomfortable emotions that were previously avoided by drinking and using, while being mindful of scope of practice.
Course Description:
In this course, Group Counseling for Chemical Dependence, the training presented will increase counselors’ ability to structure group sessions in a way that increases efficiency and effectiveness, while maintaining their proper focus. Participants will also increase their understanding of the counselor’s role when facilitating a CD group and learn specific strategies to aid clients in processing and coping with uncomfortable emotions.
Instructor: Bob Tyler, BA, LAADC, CADC II
Bob Tyler has been working in the chemical dependence recovery profession since 1990. After beginning his personal recovery from alcohol and drug addiction in December of 1988, he completed the Alcohol and Studies Program at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). He then worked as a Counselor at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica until 1997 when he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at LMU. He served as Program Director at Life Change Residential Treatment Center for two years, followed by 14 years at Twin Town Treatment Centers where he served as Director of Operations and Clinical Services managing their six Intensive Outpatient Treatment programs – each serving adults and adolescents. He left there in 2013 to pursue his passion of helping people get sober who can’t afford rehab founding STAT Sobriety Services, a 501(c)(3), non-profit.
Bob served for fourteen years on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (CAADAC), chaired its Quality Assurance and Third Party/Managed Care Committees for eight of those years, and served as its President for two years ending in January 2009. He then served as Treasurer of the California Foundation for the Advancement of Addiction Professionals (CFAAP) from 2011 – 2014, and in 2015 was a founding board member for the California Consortium for the Advancement of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP). Bob also serves on numerous Advisory Boards for Alcohol and Drug Studies Programs and is on faculty at LMU Extension teaching Case Management and Ethics in their Alcohol and Drug Studies program.
