Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice

You will need to purchase 1 unit for every 1 hour of coursework to gain access to the certificate of completion.

You will receive a certificate of completion after passing the exam, completing the course evaluation, and purchasing the appropriate number of units.  The certificate of completion will then be accessible on your myCourses page in the Your Course History section under the tab “Aspira Courses I’ve Passed”.  There will be a “Download” button under the “Certificate” column that you will be able to click on to pull up your certificate once all requirements listed above have been met.

Course Description:

This course addresses the following questions: What professional standards should guide substance abuse treatment counselors? What is an appropriate scope of practice for the field? Which competencies are associated with positive outcomes? What knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) should all substance abuse treatment professionals have in common?

Course Objectives

1. Identify the four Transdisciplinary Foundations.
2. Describe at least two specific skills required to demonstrate competency in substance abuse treatment.
3. Explain the knowledge required to demonstrate competency in substance abuse treatment.
4. Identify two recommended attitudes to increase competency in substance abuse treatment.
5. Identify three models of addiction.
6. Describe the social, political, economic, and cultural context within which addiction and substance abuse exist, including risk and resiliency factors that characterize individuals and groups and their living environments.
7. Utilize at least two clinical evaluation tools.
8. Create at least one effective substance abuse treatment plan.
9. Explain at least three professional responsibilities within addiction counseling.
10. Explain at least three ethical responsibilities within addiction counseling.
11. Apply at least two addiction counseling clinical documentation skills.
12. Discuss at least one key factor in client and family addiction education.
13. Identify at least two addiction counseling related referrals.
14. Explain at least one key factor in cultural competency related to addiction counseling.
15. Identify at least two addiction counseling resources.
